🇶🇦Taking a dog or cat to Qatar: entry rules and flights

A microchip identifying the animal. The official portal page refers to microchipping as a means of identification and does not name a standard number; international practice and carrier requirements point to an ISO 11784/11785 chip implanted before the rabies vaccination, so that is what to travel with.

A current rabies vaccination given at least 30 days before the date of travel. The vaccination certificate is part of the mandatory document set for the permit. The animal itself must be more than four months old on the day of entry.

Dogs only. Vaccinations besides rabies — for dogs against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus and parainfluenza; HONEST CAVEAT: the official page refers only to a 'vaccination record' without listing diseases. This list comes from a secondary source and is kept as guidance for the vet visit, not as a verified requirement.

A rabies antibody report from an accredited laboratory. The portal states explicitly that it is required for some countries of departure — the list of those countries is not published. Check with the Department of Animal Resources before buying tickets.

Important on timing: secondary sources describe a three-month wait after blood sampling; the official source does not confirm it. We build those three months into the earliest-departure calculation anyway, as a safety margin — being ready early costs less than missing the date. Ask about the waiting period when you apply.

A veterinary certificate issued within 14 days before entry and either issued or endorsed by a government veterinarian.

HONEST CAVEAT: the official portal page lists only a copy of the owner's ID and the vaccination record with the rabies certificate — it says nothing about the certificate form or the 14-day window. The requirement is kept because removing it would be a relaxation: both carriers and border officers ask for a veterinary certificate. But its basis is secondary, and the exact form is worth confirming with the Department of Animal Resources.

An import permit from the Department of Animal Resources. It is obtained IN PERSON at one of the department's three veterinary clinics — on Al Matar Street, in Al Rayyan or Al Shamal: an application form is filled in and a copy of the owner's ID and the animal's vaccination record are submitted (a rabies certificate is mandatory). The permit is valid for ONE MONTH — obtaining it far in advance is pointless, it will expire.
