Switzerland sets its own requirements for bringing in dogs and cats. From any departure country your pet needs microchip, rabies vaccination and import declaration. What is needed on top — rabies antibody titre test, pet passport, veterinary health certificate and import permit — depends on the country you fly from. The rules are the same for dogs and cats.

From countries with a high risk of rabies — and Russia is one for Switzerland — puppies and kittens under SEVEN months are not admitted at all. This is not a formality but a consequence of the protocol: the vaccination is given no earlier than 12 weeks, the antibody titre 30 days after that, and another three months must pass after the blood sample. Before seven months an animal physically cannot complete the steps.

Entry is only permitted via the appropriately authorised points of entry and is therefore only possible by direct air transport via Basel, Geneva or Zurich airports.

It is forbidden to bring dogs with docked ears and/or tails into the country.

A recognised EU or Swiss pet passport. From EU countries Switzerland requires three things — a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and a passport; a veterinary certificate is needed only when entering from a third country.
