Thailand sets its own requirements for bringing in dogs and cats. From any departure country your pet needs microchip, rabies vaccination, additional vaccination, veterinary health certificate and import permit. The rules are the same for dogs and cats.

Pets may not enter through just any airport: there are 6 designated points. Order matters more than the list: the microchip goes in before the rabies vaccination, or the vaccination does not count. 35 carriers in our directory fly direct to Thailand, and their pet conditions differ.

The pet must be at least 4 months old on the day of entry. This is a separate threshold, not a consequence of the vaccination age: even a puppy vaccinated at 12 weeks waits until four months.

Points of entry 6 airports +

The quarantine stations that process entry operate at six airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Chiang Mai (CNX), Phuket (HKT), Samui (USM) and Krabi (KBV). At Suvarnabhumi the station for hand-carried pets is next to baggage carousel 8 and works around the clock; the cargo terminal works weekdays only, 08:30–16:30, so a pet arriving as cargo cannot be collected at the weekend. Plan the arrival within working hours.

There is no quarantine as long as the animal shows no signs of illness. That said, the quarantine officer retains discretionary authority to detain any animal, including one in transit. A healthy appearance on arrival matters more here than in countries with a formal quarantine.

Microchip+

A microchip and the certificate of its implantation. The chip number goes into application form R1/1 together with breed, sex, date of birth and colour, and the same number must appear on all vaccination certificates. The chip is implanted before the rabies vaccination.
